My New Apron!!!

January 21, 2026

First project entry!~ There were actually some projects I wanted to add before this one, but I was just starting the library so I didn't want to add it. It was around Halloween time so it was a pretty big one. Anyway, I made myself an apron to wear for when I'm working/cooking/sculpting. I've been needing one for a while so I decided to just make one. I had a lot of leftover green fabric from when I was making my Halloween costume so it became the main body of the apron. I unfortunately did not think to take progress pictures because it interupts my work flow and I was really deep in it. But I don't think there's much to show.

So I started with the apron shape. I had one laying around and used that to trace out the pattern right onto the fabric. That apron was a bit smaller, especially the top so I eyeballed it and made it bigger. Cut that out and bam. Easy peasy. Next was the straps or ties or whatever. I understood that it's similar to how a bias tape works(I think?), where you basically take a strip of fabric and fold it in on itself. I found a very straightforward tutorial through a youtube reel and followed that. I also took measurements for how long the straps would need to be. I considered making the ties longer so I can wrap it around and tie it in the front, but it just seemed like a hassle so I gave up on that. Considering I didn't have an iron with me to fold it down and make the seams neat, it turned out well. For the more fickle straps, I ended up making it just slightly damp enough to fold and help it keep shape. I also made shorter straps in a similar fasion to make belt loops for trinkets! I also just looked at jeans to see how it was sewn on. They're became a bit crooked, but it's still functional! I finished the base apron overnight.

The next morning I moved on to the very necessary pockets. I love big pockets on my clothes. I measured it to be big enough to at least fit my phone, and I eyeballed the positioning based on where my hand would land. I used denim scraps that my sibling gave me from when she was shortening her jeans. One of the scraps had a few rips, but I thought it would be cool to mend it with bright colored thread which is what I did. It required a lot of zigzag stitches, I wanted to do either a bring pink, orange, or red, but I settled for red. It kind of looked like bloody scratches lol. For the other pocket, I wanted a design on it too, so I sketched out my bunny character on paper, traced it onto fabric and cut it out to make a patch. I used more zigzags to kind of embroider the edges, and then add cheeks in a different color. Oh but Macbeth, my evil sewing machine... He always gives me the most difficulty with zigzag stitches for some reason, so I had to rip out the seams for the cheeks twice. One because he jammed and made the tension all wrong, and again because I ran out of the orangey peachy colored thread... So then I tried using red and it just didn't look right, but I didn't want to rip out threads again (REALLY NEED TO GET A SEAM SIPPER), so I further embroidered over the peach fabric with more red and it looks alright. Macbeth was really uncooperative with the face part, so I embroidered the eyes and mouth by hand. It was very annoying, but it didn't take too long. I should mention that I did this with my brand new free motion quilting foot! I'm no longer limited in sewing in two directions. I had a small panic when I realized my machine can't lower the feed dogs, so I looked it up and found out I needed a little piece to cover them. To my releif it did come with my machine so I wouldn't have to wait to finish this project. Sewing the pockets onto the apron itself was also easy... is what I want to say but Macbeth has to be uncooperative. It wasn't even zig zags this time. After I sewed on the bunny pocket, I realized the stitches on the back was messy. I don't know why, but it happens often even though I adjust the tension. I was even using a needle specifically for denim! But I did not want to rip out threads again so I just dealt with it, but honestly I'll probably have to do that in the future. Some parts are already loosening and I want to readjust the position so it's more to the side. The other pocket had no issues whatsoever. And then after a bit of cleaning up and tying off loose ends it was done! My very own apron that I made all by myself! It only took like... 15 hours hahha...

I'm so soo happy with it. There's a few inconsistent and crooked stitches, and the embroidering on the bunny isn't as neat as I would have liked it, but it's an apron. It's going to get worn down and messy. I want to add some kind of deisgn to the upper portion on the front as well, but I haven't decided on what yet. Over time I'll probably add other little patches and maybe a trim for some color contrast. Having a sewing machine is seriously the best! I can do so many things and it makes me feel so powerful. I have another project in mind that I want to get to soon. Hopefully it won't take as long.
