Food from places I like and meals I made myself. Good food, bad food, randomly thrown together food, all food are here.
Happy Thanksgiving and wow, first entry into the cookbook! My friends and I had a friendsgiving potluck (more here), and I made meatballs and baked pies with one of my friends. I'll start with the pies since I made that first. My friend and I had planned to make a raspberry pie for ages and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. We decided to also do pumpkin pie since it felt appropriate for the event, and then we had a third idea pitched to us. A fucked up thing of Monster pie, literally and metaphorically. It was because a friend introduced us to the Taco Bell baja blast pie, and we found a recipe whcih was easily modifiable. Between coffee and Redbull, they decided on Monster and I kind of wanted to know how that would taste, so yeah Monster pie. I would say it went pretty well considering we were making pies for the first time. It was all pretty simple and easy to make. We used premade pie crusts and made the fillings ourselves following a recipe. There were only a few hiccups. First I accidentally spilled pie filling in the oven and caused it to burn and smoke up the kitchen, but to be fair the oven racked had an upwards curving edge which made it SUPER akward to put the pie in. We made an eggwash for the raspberry pies, but we made it in the same bowl the raspbery filling was made in, so it just turned... grey. We also boilied too much monster so we had to go out and get more, but we did try the concentrated monster as shots and it was STRONG. Like drinking melted down candy, but I did like it. Then we fucked up seperating egg yolks with two, maybe three failed eggs, and then successfully seperating 4 yolks so we just had like a lot of eggs left. We wanted to make the monster pie a different color from the strawberry flavor. It started off pink, then the added yolks made it yellow, and we thought it would be funny to make it grey like the eggwash so we added black and purple food coloring, but it turned green? I topped it with an espurr cut from dough and it was really wide looking, but it was pie.

As for taste? Monster pie was a hit despite everyone else's reluctance to eat it. Raspberry pies were not bad either, but I think the dough was slightly raw. Pumpkin pie was not eaten during the party, but everyone who took a slice home really liked it. I also think it tasted the best. The leftover pie filling was also mixed with flour and baking powder to make bread. I really want to make it again, but since we didn't have measurements for the pumpkin sludge I'd have to igure something out. I'll also add all the pie recipies below:
For the meatballs, I made two versions to accomodate for our vegeterian friends, and I made the veggie balls by following this recipie here! I didn't follow it exactly- used white rice instead of brown, and used a different mix of spices. I also didn't have a food processor and tried to mash it with my hands while wearing a vinyl glove, but it was so hot I gave up. The eggs were also brought over from fucking up the Monster pie and I didn't want to waste it and I could use it for meatballs, so I dumped them in a takeout box and used them. I didn't follow a recipie for the meat meatballs. Just mixed ground beef, onions, breadcrumbs, the eggs, and the same seasoning mixture. Both tasted really good and although the veggie ones were a bit bland, it was good with some siracha and other sauces. I'd like to remake them and improve the flavor.
I didn't take a picture of them after I cooked them, but you can see them in the top image.
